Session Description:
George McCabe, Emeritus Professor of Statistics, Purdue University, passed away on August 17, 2023, at the age of 78. Over his 50 years at Purdue, George had a huge impact on the direction of the department, the careers of uncountable students and colleagues, and the lives of practically everyone he met. Through a series of questions, panel members will discuss his numerous and impactful contributions to statistics through their own collaborative experiences. Each panelist will focus on a specific research domain of his and discuss topics such as George's unique and effective approaches to consulting and collaboration, his compelling mentoring philosophy, and his enduring influence on their lives and careers. The domains the panelist are planning are 1) global nutrition, 2) developing and encouraging a student's passion for statistics and entrepreneurship, 3) translational statistics, 4) bone health research, and 5) external consulting and the human element in interactions. We plan to open questions/comments to the audience the last thrid of the time.
This was originally submitted as a memorial session, but it sadly was not successful. Given the fact that George had a longstanding career as a consulting statistician and the panel planned to talk about the various facets associated with his collaborations and mentoring, we think this session would be of general interest to many members of the section.
