Room: CC-207B
This session will focus on fostering successful collaborations between statisticians and subject matter experts from other domains. Our esteemed panelists from both academic and non-academic (industry and government) collaborative research environments will share their insights on the role of effective communication, shared ownership of goals, and leveraging diverse perspectives to drive best practices in establishing, developing, and maintaining productive collaborative relationships.
The discussion will encompass all phases of research projects – from design through analysis and interpretation to results dissemination. Panelists will provide recommendations based on their lived experience that include stories of both successes and failures in collaborative research that have helped shape their perspective. Key challenge areas such as building an institutional culture for collaboration and creating shared expectations surrounding authorship attribution, timeline management, effort estimation, and scientific and statistical rigor will be addressed. In addition, panelists will share strategies for overcoming these challenges and barriers that may hinder effective collaboration in cross-functional settings.
This session will offer an enriching platform for attendees not only for understanding best practices in collaborative research but also for enhancing communication skills within team-based settings. Our distinguished panelists include Dr. Nichole Carlson - a Professor at Colorado School of Public Health who also serves as Associate Chair for Collaboration & Team Science in the Department of Biostatistics & Informatics and Director of the Center for Innovative Design and Analysis. Dr. Manisha Desai - the Kim and Ping Li Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Data Science, Associate Dean of Research, and Director of the Quantitative Sciences Unit at Stanford. Dr. Brian Millen - Vice President and Global Head of Biostatistics and Real World Data Analytics at Biogen with extensive experience in interdisciplinary research in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Joanne Wendelberger – a statistician whose experience includes numerous interdisciplinary collaborations as a Scientist and R&D Manager at Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as consulting interactions in academic and industrial settings. Each panelist brings a unique perspective shaped by their vast experiences across different sectors within the field.
