Sports analytics courses and degrees have seen tremendous growth in the last few years,. As more individuals begin to create new educational experiences, we felt it was an excellent time to have a conversation about what is most important. In this session, panelists will share different perspectives on the evolution of sports analytics instruction. The list of panelists includes individuals who have created undergraduate and graduate programs at large and small schools, and/or have served as consultants to different professional teams. In particular, panelists will discuss key principles in sports analytics education, commonalities across sports, distinctions from statistics, how they have incorporated student projects, competitions, and portfolio development, development of communication skills, making sports analytics accessible to non-sports fans, use of the new SCORE network and other resources, and how we can improve our courses and programs to better prepare students for current needs.
Each panelist will give a 5-10 minute overview, and then the session will focus on questions from the audience and organizers, moderated by our session chair.
Panelists will have 2-3 zoom meetings prior to JSM to coordinate.
This session will appeal to anyone with existing or proposed sports analytics components at their institution as a way to assess the current state of the field.
