There have been increasing federal efforts to include sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics (SOGISC) into demographic data collection. This session discusses the promise of SOGISC data collection within the context of the challenges created by social and historical contexts. In particular, this panel will provide a historical overview of the federal and social climate impacting SOGISC data collection, discuss the evolution of SOGISC data collection along with the newest federal guidance, and comment on the challenges and consequences in measuring SOGISC data on the LGBT community and society at large. This panel will also emphasize the impact of such data has on AI algorithms that are increasingly implemented in various sectors of society.
