Work and school are important, but sometimes the best things happen when you're not doing exactly what you're supposed to do. For me, this manifested itself in thinking about sports analytics when I was supposed to be doing something else. In this talk, I'll review some of my work on sports analytics over the past 25 years (e.g. openWAR, STRAIN, etc.) (and also the "real" work I should have been doing while I was working on interesting sports problems.) I'll present what I've learned from thinking about sports analytics and how it has helped inform my "real" work, and how my "real" work has informed how I think about sports analytics. Finally, I'll present some future ideas for projects for others to work on instead of doing what they are supposed to be doing.
