ML07: Fostering Collaboration Between Statisticians, Programmers, and Other Stakeholders

Human intelligence is defined to be the ability to learn, adapt, and use knowledge to solve problems. Without these our success is limited. An essential component is soft skills, and it is no secret that neither statisticians nor programmers have the greatest reputation in this area.
Google defines soft skills as personal attributes and communication abilities that help one succeed in one's career. Examples include the ability to adapt and adjust, respectful communication (speaking and listening), the ability to inspire and motivate others, problem solving skills, and time management. Technical and problem-solving skills are usually part of our core skills as statisticians and programmers. Leading, inspiring, motivating, and communicating may not come natural to many of us. Fortunately, all of this can be learned and can improve cross-functional collaborations.
The focus of this round-table discussion will be to share experiences with learning and teaching soft skills and leadership principles as statisticians and programmers.
