It is an exciting time for statistics in sports! Universities have begun to offer sport analytics as an undergraduate major and to hire faculty explicitly encouraged to publish research in this area. What is the purpose? We will discuss the case for (and the case against) sport analytics as a standalone field of academic study. I will share some of my experiences with some of the industry leaders in sport analytics (particularly in baseball), and we will discuss what we can do to support early career researchers in this space and to help students prepare themselves for a competitive job market.
