ML15: From Collaborator to Leader: Expanding the Role of Biostatisticians in Team Science in the AI Era

Biostatisticians are essential contributors to clinical and translational research, yet their roles are often framed narrowly around analysis rather than scientific leadership. As artificial intelligence (AI) and automated analytic tools become more common in clinical research workflows, the need for statistical leadership in study design, analysis planning, and interpretation is increasingly critical to ensure valid and reproducible evidence. This roundtable will explore how biostatisticians can expand leadership across the research lifecycle, including trial design, endpoint selection, analytic strategy, and interpretation of results. Topics include oversight of AI-enabled analyses, managing expectations for speed versus rigor, clarifying intellectual contributions and authorship, and mentoring trainees in both statistical foundations and modern analytic tools. Participants will discuss strategies for maintaining methodological integrity while working within collaborative, high-pressure research environments. The session aims to promote practical approaches for strengthening the leadership role of biostatisticians in contemporary clinical and translational team science.
