TL11: A Community-Driven Differential Privacy Deployment Registry

Differential privacy is of increasing importance to the statistical community, and there is a rapidly growing set of deployments. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has proposed guidelines for creating "A Community-Driven Differential Privacy Deployment Registry" (https://csrc.nist.gov/pubs/ir/8588/ipd), with an aim to (1) help industry reach consensus on best practices, (2) provide public snapshots of the privacy landscape so that the community can judge new deployments in context and shape guidance accordingly, and (3) incentivize industry to make their choices public. We describe an initial schema to systematize this information and an editorial and governance process to ensure this information is reliable. NIST is developing a community of interested stakeholders to guide this work. OpenDP has launched a working example of a registry at https://registry.opendp.org, featuring more than 20 initial entries, with use-cases drawn from official statistics, big tech, epidemiology, and other sectors. We invite participants to join leaders of this to discuss potential uses, opportunities, and challenges of a differential privacy registry.
